The famous game winner. Also the 1st game that started consecutive games of at least 30 points at Charlotte. Being a playoff bound team at the time, the Lakers had come off one of their hugest victories of the season downing the Mavericks by 5 off of 36 points from Kobe. But that didn't stop the next game against the expansion team to be easy.
The Charlotte Bobcats who were one of the worse teams in the league never gave the Lakers a sigh of relief in the game as Emeka Okafor made history as the first Bobcat to reach 30 points. He also had 11 rebounds. Matt Carroll helped too as he exploded in the mid 4th quarter with 3 straight shots. Chucky Atkin's defense was also as bad as it was the whole season as Brevin Knight also made history as the first Bobcat to record over 15 assists. He also made bigger history as the player to record the most assists without a turnover. He had a 21/17 game while playing tough D on Kobe.
Kobe had been frustrated by the Bobcat defense the whole night and was 4-14 entering the 8 minute mark of the 4th quarter although he was contributing in other ways with 8 assists. But, even during the middle of a mediocre season(by his standards), Kobe willed his team to a victory behind 8-10 shooting. The rampage started when the Lakers were down 100-90 with 7 minutes to go. But in just under two minutes, Kobe made 10 straight points to bring LA within 103-99. He made 6 straight jumpshots at one point including 3 threes. He topped the game off with a game winning shot from long range to help the Lakers avoid an embarrassment. Kobe finished the game off with 32 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds on a respectable 12-24 from the field.
When asked what spurred the scoring barrage Kobe responded, "One of those guys who was sitting courtside at the beginning of the fourth quarter said 'Kobe, 11 points, we're shutting you down.' I just looked at him and said 'Dude, I'm about to get going.' Brevin Knight helped me out, too. He got me going."
When asked what Knight said to him when a technical foul occurred, Kobe responded, "I don't know. I can't hear him. He's too little."
