It's true though (can't know for sure what Merkinmuffy wrote b/c it's been blanked out), but as someone not familiar with this band, I had to google this after hearing it for the first time. To me it sounded like mind games, so I just googled for 'that song that sounds like mind games' or some such thing. There's really no insult intended here - just us uninformed people hearing a connection.
The funny thing is that the Flaming Lips definitely rip off a ton of songs (especially in the early days--now it's just basically a '60s/early '70s sound in general), it's just I can't say I hear the commonalities between these two. Isn't it strange how one person can find similarities when another can't (like how I see similarities between many people physically, but can never find anyone to agree with me)?
I see what you mean. I played this to my wife and she can't hear the connection. It's just one instrument, somewhere in the background that reminds me of Mind Games. My wife tells me I'm being geeky. But I think the similarity is coincidental, definitely not a rip-off. After all, most rock relies on the same three or four chord progressions.
