Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a direct communication pathway between a brain and an external device. BCIs are often aimed at assisting, augmenting or repairing human cognitive or sensorimotor functions. Leveraging rapid growth in the fields of microelectronics, computer processing and imaging, the field of BCI has grown tremendously in recent years, mostly toward neuro-prosthetic applications that aim at restoring damaged hearing, sight and movement. This early work holds tremendous possibilities to better the lives of millions of patients affected by motor disorders and paralyses. However, this early work is almost entirely dependent on invasive, implantable brain devices, limiting its ability to be used in a widespread manner.
This prize would usher in applications that could garner such information in an non-invasive means, enabling not only the replacement of lost natural brain function, but could also be developed to enhance human capabilities. Once the technological hurdles are overcome -- and they are significant -- the potential of neuroelectronics will be limited only by the plasticity of the brain and its ability to adapt to new experiences.

About the X PRIZE Foundation
http://xprize.org
The X PRIZE Foundation is an educational (501c3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity, thereby inspiring the formation of new industries and the revitalization of markets that are currently stuck due to existing failures or a commonly held belief that a solution is not possible. The foundation addresses the world's Grand Challenges by creating and managing large-scale, high-profile, incentivized prize competitions that stimulate investment in research and development worth far more than the prize itself. It motivates and inspires brilliant innovators from all disciplines to leverage their intellectual and financial capital.

About time ^_^ maybe they'll actually use an organic BCI like the USB system designed around giant squid neurons :3
