God I love this, do you hear Carnagie on the track PA? The people screaming? Indy will always be the greatest race.

This is some of the most incredible racing I've seen. Really does give me the chills.

The strength of DISparity to the cars is that you can have man-to-man duels like was seen at Indianapolis four years in a row, 1989-1992. Fittipaldi and Unser, Luyendyk and Rahal, Mears and Andretti, Unser and Goodyear. All pairs, at least half a lap ahead of third, and yet the drama was electrifying. While I like Indy being where the decision-making buck stops in American open-wheel...I would have the wide-open formula again, and if the rich and powerful win...they just bring more, to win.
Wow...I just relived that finish... I have the race on tape of course, but haven't seen it in years.
This was sort of the start of the "International Era"... Emmo was the first foreign driver to win Indy since Graham Hill in 1966, and this was about the time when the number of foreign-born drivers began catching up and then passing the number of American-born drivers in Indy car racing.
Also, listen to that crowd as Emmo and Al Jr fight it out. If that don't give you chills check your pulse.

As a 7-year-old Little Al fan, I cried at the end of this race. I'll always wonder how the last couple of laps would have unfolded if there wasn't any lapped traffic to deal with. It's still one of my favorite races despite the ending.
I've always thought that Al's double thumbs up gesture to Emmo was sarcastic, but it's always treated as being genuine. Perhaps it's better that way.
