Today I would like to discuss the Indian perspective on education. Most Indians value education very highly. They consider it their ticket to a better job, a better life, and a better future for their offspring. Education in India has a heavy emphasis on math, science and engineering. If you ask most Indian kids in India and abroad what they want to be when they grow up they will most likely say doctor or engineer. I have also heard that students spend their mornings in school, their afternoons in tutoring sessions and their evenings doing homework under the watchful eye of their parents. Despite the intense focus on education, not many children make it to universities, especially the rural and urban poor who may end their education in secondary school.
I also wonder how watchful parents are in lower income neighborhoods. After school what happens to these children? If there are no after school programs, no tutors and no organized extracurricular activities, what do these children do? Many of their parents work 3 or more jobs to make ends meet so they do not have time to encourage their children to complete their homework or stay out of trouble after school.
No matter how much a parent values education, I think the time they spend with their child outside of school is crucial to the child's development and work ethic as they enter secondary school and eventually university.
