Perfect day to go down to Brunswick junction & watch the RB-3 train turn around on the Wye, become the BR-4 train, & head back to Rockland. There's a new car from the New Jersey based parent company, Morristown & Erie in the consist. I think it's too modern, & looks silly on there, but you be the judge.

  • yeah that new car is fugly.... i'd rather have the old streamliners anyday then what we have now a days.

  • Agreed. Thanks for stopping by.

  • How often do they use the wye to turn the train around when the locomotives are back to back? When I rode it down to Brunswick they just ran them around the coaches which seems like it would be a lot easier. Also when is #489 going to be back? Its at the Morristown and Erie shops in New Jersey getting overhauled isn't it? I'm assuming it will be back for next season. The train looks so much better with two locos. leading back to back than with just one.

  • The wye gets used every time now, since they don't want to disconnect the coaches with passengers on them, due to the HEP's in the FL9's running the power for the coaches(A/C, lights, etc.) The only place they run around the coaches is at the Union station small yard in Rockland. Single engine only, also means the turntable has to be used to spin the FL9 around which is always fun to watch. 489 should be back from NJ soon hopefully. No idea when the exact dates are though.

  • Meh.... No more silly than old diners on Amtrak trains mixed with Viewliner sleepers and Amfleet II coaches and lounges. On Via's Ocean, you have a Park Observation dome car on the rear of otherwise all-Renaissance consists.

  • Yeah, I hear ya there. A few folks at Maine Eastern RR, (including me), hate that Comet car. It's a pain in the rear to hook up to the other cars. Sitting on the siding in the yard as I type this. It used to be a NJ Transit car, & looks like a subway car inside, with that early 80's feel to it.

  • It is a retired "Comet I" commuter car from NJT. Right now they're just using it because the "Pine" is in NJ and they needed the extra capacity. At this point in time it is completely unrelated to any future commuter service on the Maine Eastern. It is possible, however, that such future service might utilize additional ex-NJT Comet cars. They're actually very good cars, despite being not as pretty as the old stainless steel streamliners.

  • i agree, i think its from the new jersey transit, cause i saw videos of the chesapeake and ohio 614 pulling its trains with those kind of coaches. i do think that they are ugly, its supposed to look vintage now modern. anyway, good filming, looks good.

  • It came from New Jersey transit. The windows are small. Because it's cheaper to fix a small window than a large picture window. It's also not stainless steel like the older ones. The rear car was a Pennsylvania Railroad Observation palour lounge.

  • okay thanks!

  • Unless the gutted the interior and replaced it with nice seats like all the other cars I would be mad if I had to ride in it when other people got to ride in the other cars for the same price. Its the same kind of coach used on the MBTA commuter rails and I'm guessing the interior is fairly similar is not exactly the same.-Which is sticky leathery seats with a dirty plastic seat back in front of you. Not to mention the windows are quite a bit smaller.

  • ick!!

  • BTW.... I'm not exactly a fan of Amtrak's Horizon fleet either which is based on the Comet design, but hey, if they are the difference between at least having a train and no train at all, I will welcome them. And don't forget how many old heavyweights were mixed into consists even at the peak of the Streamliner era.
