Right idea. But the USGA frowns on using a putter in a near-vertical orientation. I face the hole but use ONE hand with the putter shaft at a 10 degree angle. Hard to believe, but it works great. Click my name to see me fill the hole with 8 balls from 20 feet.

actually no, this is illegal as of today's USGA rules. i read it in the book, "How to fix the yips forever" by Hank Haney

Yes it does. You cannot straddle the line of the putt. This method is 100% legal. Sam Snead used a similar method in PGA events.
