2010-04-14 Meteor — WGN TV Chicago

The WGN staff report the event in a ridiculous and unprofessional manner. The decision to use the X-Files theme in the background is the nail in their credibility coffin. I think they call this non-diegetic music in film theory. Music that has nothing to do with the event being portrayed. It's only purpose is to force the viewer to think a certain way. What they want you to think is that, "this could be an extraterrestrial event." Well WGN, guess what? It is, but not in the sense you're implying. This is a meteor. Which means it came from outside the earth and is by definition extraterrestrial. It isn't evidence of extraterrestrial intelligent life visiting earth. So shut the music off. Do your job and report the news.
