UPDATE (11/21/2008): LAST REVISION OF THE ARRANGE (MP3):
http://dioxaz.free.fr/download/music/sonic2end_fmarrange_alt5.mp3
This one is better mastered, quieter (no more loudness-based mastering) and the mix is more balanced. I also changed the reverb on the snare drum. For mastering, I used a free VST plugin called MDA Multiband.
-------------------
A little note: don't pay attention to the blockiness at the beginning (nor the pixellated preview), it was that or Youtube wouldn't accept my Stereo FLV (which is below 350 Kbps! But YT changed their upload routines in early June).
This is an arrange version of Sweet Sweet Sweet from the Sonic 2 ending cutscene.
Indeed, I'm referring to the song playing right after defeating Eggman, not the megamix heard during staff roll.
Made using the following VST instruments or audio tracks:
- 15x VOPM
- 4x FM7
- 11x Yamaha RY30 drum samples
- 5x layers
This is currently the third revision of this arrange. It's the Sonic 2 HD initiative which motivated me to do this, as I though it would be the song I'm the more at ease with to arrange.
The arrange actually uses all the original sounds from the Genesis/Mega Drive! But I spiced them up by overlaying several 4-operator and 6-operator sounds under them. Some of these sounds have been used for additional melodies, too. In the first revision, those background melodies were a little too loud so I turned them down a bit. On this third revision, I swapped the panning of strings and piano sections and decreased their volume again to give more room to main sounds.
As a result, when listened in monaural, the song sounds almost as its Genesis/Mega Drive equivalent. In stereo, it sounds more polished.
Some may find it a little too synthy. They're right, since it only uses FM synthesis (this was intentional) when a little more balanced choice of sound sources would have been probably more appropriate.
Despite this, it almost sounds how it could have sounded back in 1992, if arranged professionally (though somewhat different from the album version of Sweet Sweet Sweet).
If some people are able to produce a better sound of this song, only by using FM synthesis, they can feel free to post a video response.
No MIDI file has been used as a base from this arrange, it was recreated from scratch by listening channel by channel.
To finish, to prove that the original tempo has been kept, I overlayed the arrange on top of the ending sequence itself making it more enjoyable, accessorily.
Hope you'll enjoy.
Do you think you could possibly program such sounds for the DX7?

It's indeed possible to program those sounds on a DX7, but you'll have to adapt parameters (find equivalent algorithms, convert envelopes, etc.) for 4-operator ones. But I actually used a few DX7 patches for that arrange (the piano one, and a string one called "somber str").

wow, that's easily the best version of the song I've heard. Great job! :D

Thanks for the comment. But I'm still convinced that better can done with that song. Mine still sound a little synthy and overproduced.
