Trier (French: Trèves; Luxembourgish: Tréier; Latin: Augusta Treverorum) is a city in Germany on the banks of the Moselle River. It is the oldest city in Germany, founded in or before 16 BC.[1] Trier is not the only city claiming to be Germany's oldest, but it is the only one that bases this assertion on having the longest history as a city, as opposed to a mere settlement or army camp.

Trier lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of ruddy sandstone in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the German border with Luxembourg and within the important Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine-growing region.

  • Thanks for posting. Trier is a city I will be visiting in March 2012. I am taking a solo vacation and ride the train around Germany. thanks for posting.

  • @wwwmsu I hope you have a fantastic time. That is how we always travel. The train system in Germany is flawless. You can set your watch by their train schedule.

  • since i'm a german i am always glad to see how some people actually see germany just as it is, a very beautiful country - with nice people and a fascinating culture - of that im proud to live in.

too many don't bring the effort of looking behind those 70 year old stereotypes which we germans are truly ashamed of. if only a bit more people would bring the attitude that you seem to have! thank you for your video and lots of good times in Deutschland! Servus!

  • We love to travel and the one thing that we try not to pack is sterotypes. We have met so many people and we are for the most part all alike with the same desires and needs. You have much to be proud of Germany is fantastic

  • Then kindest regards from Trier to you :)

Nice that somebody loves it as much as I do!

Was born here and I would never go away from here

  • Thank you. Trier is one of my favorite cities in the world and I go back any chance that I get. You are so lucky to live there. Thank you for watching.

  • Enjoyed the video and comments. I visited Trier a couple times back in 1975 when I was in the U.S. Army stationed near Kaiserslautern. I arrived by train. The Bahof isn't far from the Porta NIgra and I stayed in a hotel on the main street leading to the Bahnof. Trier was indeed beautiful. However, my personal favorite was Heidelberg. I hope you found time to visit there on one of your trips.

  • Baharah? What's the name of the town at the beginning of your vid?

The Hauptmarkt was destroyed by allied bombings / fire during the war and has been expertly rebuilt so that it looks exactly like it did before its destruction.

Great vid. My great grandmother was born and raised in Trier. My mom and I have been there several times.

    Thanks for uploading !!

  • Please don't construe this as any kind of lewd comment, but I must say, you are some kind of babe!! I found it difficult to focus on the rest of the video, and wished the resolution was a bit better so I could admire you even more.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this with us—the scenes of Germany were quite nice too. Okay, er, I'm finished bothering you now. :?)

  • guess what a stone of the porta nigra could tell you: It saw the West roman emperors, romans trading goods on one side, and the huge roman graveyard outside the city. It saw Germanic tribes and Franks attacking the city, it saw powerful archbishops rise and fall, it was rebuilt a church, then the steeple was bombed by Napoleon. And then after 1806 Trier began to decline because the bishops opposed industrialization. And of course, Saint Simeon was mured in the Porta Nigra alive.

  • io ci vivo e non con nessuna Cambio Altra Mondo cittá al.

  • TRIER WAS FOUNDED BY TREBETA, AN ASSYRIAN PRINCE, CENTURIES BEFORE ANCIENT ROME. TREBETA WAS THE LEGENDARY FOUNDER OF TRIER HE WAS THE SON OF NINUS KING OF ASSYRIA A WIFE PRIOR TO HIS MARRIAGE TO QUEEN SEMIRAMIS. HIS STEPMOTHER SEMIRAMIS DESPISED HIM AND WHEN SHE TOOK OVER THE KINGDOM AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS FATHER NINUS TREBETA LEFT ASSYRIA AND WENT TO EUROPE HE LED A GROUP OF COLONIZERS TO SETTLE AT TRIER AROUND 2000 BC.
