Can you hear the Buzz? (Expand for notes.)

Samsung Plasma Buzz Test PN58C8000

Important note: At higher volumes you should hear the mechanical noise of the tape deck from the video camera. I thought it was a useful reference as background noise. (Plus I didn't have any other device with a better mic.)

The Buzz is loudest at the center of the screen. Unfortunately this is where I normally sit when watching TV. But you can still hear it all the way around the TV.

This was recorded after I had the 58" TV about a week. Delivered 9/16/10. Recorded 9/22/10. Returned: 9/23/10

Recorded:
- Sound with TV Off for reference (10ft)
- Buzz at 5, 10, and 15 ft
* LISTEN when camera is tilted down
* This angles the mic toward the TV
- YouTube video for comparative audio levels
* Note that I did not tilt the camera down during the YouTube video, but I went and checked later and the Buzzing could be heard the same as the other 10 ft videos.
- Buzz behind TV
- Sound with TV off & on again (10ft)

Additional Notes:
- There IS background noise from Camera Tape Deck
- Listen when the camera tilts forward for the difference
- Random clicks and pops are from touching the camera
- Recorded with Sony HDR-HC1 (HDV Camera)
- Buzz is worse on darker / black screens
- Should be able to find the "Charlie bit my finger - again !"
YouTube video by "HDCYT" for a volume reference
- TV Manufactured 8/2010 in Mexico

  • Our 50 inch plasma from Samsung also makes this whine. It's called Coil Whine. Graphics cards in computers also make the noise. They say its not harmful, just enoying.

I don't know what to believe. It doesn't sound healthy. Though the TV is 2 years old now.

  • @C00kie007 Yup we swapped the 58" for a 50" and I can still hear it on certain scenes. What is more concerning though is that I am getting a "fan grinding" noise at random times now. (Sounds similar to what happens when you get a GSM cell phone too close to unshielded speakers. But there are no phones nearby.) I don't know what is causing that, but it is happening more frequently and lasting longer now. Might have to do a warranty swap since I am still under extended warranty.

  • We have the PN50C8000, and we DO NOT hear any kind of buzzing whatsoever... : P

  • @OtomoTenzi We replaced the 58" PN58C8000 with a 50" PN50C8000 and it is much better. The noise is still there, but we have kept the 50" since it is so much quieter on the buzzing side. (Note that some people are lucky and can't hear this noise at all. The camera picks it up, but even some people posted online that they don't hear any buzzing in these videos.)

    I get what ya mean... : P

That's quite typical of Samsung build quality.

I'm guessing here that the buzz can be heard louder on the larger sizes of this model.

Did you have yours on the Dynamic picture mode?

  • @OtomoTenzi Had it on Movie mode during this recording... (or maybe Standard, never used Dynamic.) But it didn't matter it buzzed on all modes. Lots of info in the 30+ page "2010 Samsung Plasma Buzz" thread on avsforum . com

I'm losing quite a bit of fait in Samsung tbh. They did this before and it was a scandal. And after all that crap happening they continue to deliver crappy hardware.

Who knows when you buy a brand new Samsung TV it will also die within a year even when they told it was all good now.

  • I bought a 50' Samsung plasma a few days ago. I'm returning it because the buzz is too annoying. It's dynamic, and varies by both head position and the brightness of the image, so it's very intrusive.

  • ...i hear the buzz (after i turned up the volume on my comp) it seems very annoying! i was planning on getting a plasma but i have been reading ALOT of reviews online about "buzzin" problems from plasma owners. most tech savvy websites say it is normal for it to buzz but plasma owners have been finding out that the buzz is caused by something that might be loose inside the tv like screws or fans or could be a software issue. now im thinking of buying a LCDtv instead. good luck with your fix

  • Man check out your home electrical installation, if you have thin wires. I have Ps50c7000 working on 220 V 50hz no buzzing at all.

  • I hear nothing :(
