Thanks Sara! Joe South started out as a songwriter for others. This song he wrote for Lynn Anderson who had the hit with it. He wrote a few of Billy Joe Royal's hits such as "Down In The Boondocks" and "I Knew You When". Ron

He didn't initially write it for Lynn Anderson, but rather he later gave it to her.

Joe, himself recorded the song first, on his 1968 album "Introspect".

According to the second hand songs website, Lynn Anderson was the FOURTH artist to record the song, but the first to have a huge hit with it. Besides Joe's original, other versions that predate Lynn's in order are: Dobie Gray, done in a soulful R&B style, and The Three Degrees(!).

Your description is a bit misleading ... "peaked at #3"? The song peaked at #3 on the POP charts and, initially intended only to be a country recording by Lynn Anderson, that was almost unheard of in 1971 (crossing over to the top of pop charts). However, Lynn's verson went #1 in 16 countries around the world and remained the biggest selling recording by a female country artist for 27 years. It was beyond a "Monster Hit" for Lynn. South also wrote another #1 for Lynn - "How Can I Unlove You"

This is the good old original version. Recorded about two years before Lynn Anderson's. The arrangement is vastly different from Lynn's cover.
