Twice a year the International Reporting Project (IRP) awards up to 12 U.S. "gatekeeper" editors fellowships to travel as a group on an intensive fact-finding visit to a single important but somewhat under covered country in the news.
In the fall of 2008 12 senior U.S. editors and producers traveled to Turkey for a 10-day International Reporting Project (IRP) Gatekeeper Editors trip. They were accompanied by Shayla Harris of the New York Times, who shot video during the trip.
Harris' stories examine the conflict between religion and secularism, health in poor areas of eastern Turkey and the views of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Islam, Iraq, the United States and domestic Turkish issues.
In this piece Harris explores the only secular democracy on the European continent where the predominant religion is Islam, a source of endless tension.

Do they really teach you and brain wash you with this kind false history in Turkish schools? Poor poor kid. The enemy is the waste and they had you really chewing your stomach inside out.
First it was Attaturk who was train by the Europeans to destroy the caliphate. Then Attaturk had to abolish Sharia in Turkey for Europe to support him. The Attaturk you praise that he help your country is the one who destroyed your country. You can only see that if you have intellect.

secularism is purely kuffr n islam is a COMPLETE SYSTEM OF LIFE meaning we in islam haveour own Economic social Political .... theories that comes all from the Holy Quran n the Sunna , so u can't take somethings n leave other things in islam , that's why Turkey as a state is a KAFFIR state n its muslim majority should stand up to change that .

This is a western centered view of history and of the world. What applies to Europe or the West doesn't necessarily applies to the rest of the world. In Europe, Christian Power time was the dark age, and the Secular era is its peak and greatest time, I admit it. But, in islamic history, it is the opposite, the golden age was under islamic power (fact), the westernised / secularised current era is its dark age (fact) and its renaissance will be islamic (Faith + Analysis + Opinion).

@Bombo10 UGHH during the time The nation of Turkey was known as the Ottoman Empire it lost the opportunity of the Renissance that went on in Europe the Ottoman empire gradually went into Decline and was left at the mercy of Europe after the Industrial revolution Europe shrugged of religion thats why it became so powerful your god couldnt save the OTTOMAN EMPIRE it was religion that led to its downfall in the end THESE WESTERN AND SECULAR IDEAS made Europe great

The time turkey had most might and power was when its identity was primarily islamic. It was considered an empire by its scared enemies who tried hard to destroy it and the weapons these ennemies used included western and secular ideas. People who lost love for Islam or those who never had it need not to reply to this message. I pray for Allah to guide you.

Turkish first !!! Muslim, Christian, Atheist or whatever is a personal choice and government, army, shool and university is to remain neutral. The Ottoman empire is fallen and was attacked (even by the Arabs, remember!!!???). Atatürk and his brave fellow Turks saved the country from foreign occupation and disentigration such as what happened with the rest of middle east. Without Atatürk , Turkey today would not exist since the last Sultans were weak rulers.
