Messing around with a cheap 2kW (cont) 230V single phase generator powered by a 196cc 6.5hp "honda clone" engine. This was a cold start and it had not been started for about a month or so, it usually starts on the first pull, it had some old gas remaining in the tank which could be the case. It also sat in a cold basement (16C/60F) Theese cost about $300 around where I live and thats cheap.
Runs pretty quiet, but has some valve noise.
The steadyshot-thing on my camera makes any engine swing, it still vibrate quite a bit on certan loads (1000-1300W and on idle).

12 CuIn
9.76 Ft/Lbs @ 2500
6.4 HP @ 3600 RPM

  • hello! i want to buy a cheap generator. what you can tell me about clone honda generators? do you have any problems? thanks!

  • @iulik17d No problems, except for high ripple on the generator output, its normal on asyncronous brushed generators hough. I do recommend break-in of the engine with some idling and replacing oil and adjusting valves at shorter than normal intervals, first time after a couple hours. Mine has almost no use, but havent got any electric and mecanic problems yet, I recommend running the carb dry after use, and storing it with no fuel in tank, It will allways start first pull with fresh gas.

  • @Da9eI hello again! thanks for reply! I have another question: brushed generator WITH AVR or brushless generator WITHOUT AVR? I find a generator with 6.5hp Kohler and Sincro alternator brushless but no AVR.

  • @iulik17d Of cource if you could get a permanent magnet syncronous generator(brushless) it would be the best choice, IF you got the money. Im not sure if mine is equipped with AVR or not, usually it is not needed as you can adjust the engine speed to change voltage, most electrical equip. will work fine within 10-15% of specified frequency and voltage. Cheap generator sets are usually better without AVR as it has one less part to fail. In many cases an aftermarket AVR can be added if needed.

  • @Da9eI is enought a 2kva generator for 1550w (light +240w refrigerator +750w water pump)? is a kipor KGE 2500 X

  • @iulik17d Mybe, keep in mind the fridge and pump require a little extra current at startup, a 60hz (3800rpm) generator has slightly more peak power (intermittent) than a 50hz (3000rpm) one. 2kva is 2kw in a resitive load (light, electric heater, etc), but can be less on inductive loads (electric motors and incandescent lights) usually rated at 70-75% of resitive. Small (and cheap) generators are really bad on inductive loads.

  • @Da9eI sorry for my englesh! I have 255W of economic light bulbs, 100W incandescent light bulb, 240w fridge, 750w pump, 50W TV, 60W laptop, 100w pump and 50w fan for wood heating =1600w. i need a 2kva or 3kva generator?

the 2kva is kipor kge 2500x (25l tank fuel, AVR)

the 3kva is a generator with kohler engine (3.6L fuel tank)

what is the best choice for me? thanks very much!

  • @netwerkthis This is JUST a theory, take it with a pinch of salt. In most cases in quality gen sets its a fuel related problem.

  • @netwerkthis Have you filled fresh gas? Old gas can sometimes cause surging at idle. I have never used inverter type generators, but as far as I know they electronicly control engine speed in eco modes and speeds up when power is needed. Just a guess (a theory), if carb is good, the engine speed could be _too_ low which forses the electronic to speed up the motor again. The generator is most likely an AC -> DC (managed) -> AC (inverted) type gen, and sometimes the diodes making DC can fail.

  • Ive got a 6yr Yamaha inverter gen. the eco mode idle surges..ive cleaned out the unit completely full tune up..still surges.. I just let it run full power unless someone has a suggestion
