  • Thanks for the answer. This is very interesting tunnel. All of our long RR tunnels in the States only have one vent. system in them and they are all at one end. It seems as though you turn enough in the tunnel to head east a quite a ways. Seems like with all the rt hand curves you are heading east a long ways, and the Lt curve isn't enough to reach the other end heading west. Could you please shed some light on that for me if you know? Thank you very much for your time. Truely interested,Jerry

  • @jercher73 As I understand it at the east entrance to the tunnel it curves to the right for a bit (don't know how many degrees of curvature) and then inside a bit where the ventilation shaft is, the tunnel has another much gentler curve to the right. The rest is dead straight. The length of the tunnel is 9.1 miles. The connaught tunnel right above this tunnel is 5 miles long. There is another tunnel just before the Mt. Mcdonald tunnel that is 1 mile long. Three tunnels later and no more pushers.

  • How far does that ventilation tunnel go, also what is the speed through the tunnel.

Great pictures of the tunnel. Thank you very much

  • @jercher73 I think it goes up and comes out on top of the mountain somewhere but I don't know for sure. These guys got it up to 59 mph but I also think that if 60 was track speed it is only for passenger. Freight trains are a lot slower than passenger.

  • The best railway video I have seen yet on Youtube!!!

My condolences on the passing of your father and uncle.

My Uncle passed on 2 years ago in

Revelstoke. He was the yard section foreman in the stoke until 1985, he probably knew your uncle and father

Best Wishes keep up the good work!!!

  • Thanks for comment. Yes he probably knew both of them. All them railroaders are a great bunch of guys!

  • What a great time they had, I enjoyed the videos very much!! Hard to believe how fast the time passes us by. Thanks for sharing with the world!!

  • I Wish VIA Still Operated On CP! Then We Could All Go Through Mount MacDonald And Mount Shaughnessy! I Also Wonder What It Would Be Like To derail Or Stall In That Tunnel, It Is Also Lit Up So It Wouldn't Be Scary But It Would Be Cold!

Sorry to Hear About Their Passing.

  • Really enjoyed the video, Sorry to hear about their passing.

  • i enjoyed this video a lot but at the end when i saw the words "both passed away"

beleive i was unbeleivable for me and i just keep watching those great persons

man they are great they served the railroad excellently i salute them

  • Over forty years ago a dad took his kid to the train yard to see the big diesels. His dad preferred the steam but that little kid liked the big SD's. It was once said that if you worked on the railway you were a somebody. From that grizzled veteran at the thottle to the young hotshot trainman, both guys were somebody to that kid forty years ago. The kid never got his chance but those old railroaders made his and generations of kids days. Those old railroaders were somebody and still are!
