* I just watched a longer version of that clip and it turns out the other guy is not his boss, it's his friend. I was thinking it was his boss and he was supposed to be at work. But after watching the longer clip, I think it's his friend and he's trying to get out of an event.

it was his friend ...not his boss / after the divorce with his wife (whom he still loves),Carl had alienated from all friends. so, in this scene he was trying to avoid meeting with his friend.

this movie is great ...being sensible 'yes-man' can dramatically improve your life .

"bitching"... i learnt this word from the soundtrack "not meant for me" by Wayne Static.
