Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff performing "something off Modern Times" at the the BriXton South Bay club at Redondo Beach, CA. This was an unexpected version of "Sirens of Titan"--a song based off the Kurt Vonnegut book of the same title.

  • Whom does Al say "died not too long ago" in intro before song really commenced? Sounds like one of his wacky play on words, like "Nicole Polean" (Napolean). Kurt Vonnegut would be correct at this date, I believe, but that's not what it sounds like to me! I meant to ask him at a show and totally forgot....Thanks to anyone who sees this and can clarify.

  • @cherimelodie Pretty sure that's what he says, "I heard Kurt Vonnegut died not too long ago," but his accent makes it a little hard to understand.

  • ZOMG!

This was always 1 of my fave Al songs (don't know whether that's despite, or because of, the subject matter, or what).

Never b4 heard any version but the one on the original album ("Modern Times" I think?) -- apparently either not normally on his show playlists, or not liked by enough YouTubers for it to show up here – til now.

Thanx so much for rectifying that!

  • @smartalek1 Glad you enjoyed it. I'd never heard him perform it live other than this once, but it was really great. You should check out their new album "Uncorked" which has a nice live version on it too!

  • @VanielDonovan Thanks! Very much aware of his good bit of British accent, and can't believe that alone would cause me to "mishear" it so way off...Maybe if I listen carefully again I'll hear like a "y'know" first, or very possibly it's just some sort of audio distortion thru my speakers. But yes, what else could it be other than Kurt Vonnegut indeed! :) (And his "Kurt" would sound much more like "cut"... thanks again.)

  • Why can't Al have a band and electric guitars? These songs are much better when they are played with the richness heard on the originals albums.

  • This one's such a great sound/style; transfers so well onstage. If only he/they would do more often; or Optical Illusion, even Elvis At The Wheel...There are many brilliant, oh-so-original tunes like these that would so grab and mesmerize audiences (and get more people looking for the albums...Optical Illusion has very relateable, none-so-esoteric lyrics, by the way.) You're so exceptional for capturing this, Vaniel. Thank you! :)

  • " I was the victim of a series of accidents" As are we all " I was drawn by the sirens of Titan " As are we all.....AS ARE WE ALL : I adore AL's lines since n early 40 years, his songs are the reason that the school english was easy for me ! I know nothing about the book "Sirens of Titan" . Thank's for posting, uploader!!!
