UP steam engine 844 launches The Western Heritage Tour Union Pacific Railroads rolling goodwill ambassador historic steam locomotive No. 844 The Western Heritage Tour will cover four states in 32 days. The tour will cover much of the territory first pioneered by the nations first transcontinental railroad, including participation in the city of Roseville, Calif., Centennial, the Western Pacific Railroad Centennial at Portola, Calif., and the 140th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in Ogden, Utah.
We are very excited to be part of so many celebrations this year, said Steve Lee, UPs manager for operating practices and No. 844s chief engineer. The towns that we are visiting have strong ties to the railroad. No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for the railroad in 1944 and is one of two operating locomotives that pull special trains for the railroad. Both are based in Cheyenne. Rail fans will be able to follow the trains journey through GPS reports available at UPs Web site, www.uprr.com. Union Pacific is one of the nations largest railroads and serves 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country.

  • As a kid, high in my loft bedroom in the below zero winter nights, as the Steam locomotives passed within 1/4 mile of our farm house, I could hear each and every mechanical click and clank with the loud whistle, like it was in our farm yard. Walked glistening rails late at night, returning home after a day visiting friend at the switch tower where he lived. Watched the Gandys as they did most all rail work by muscle. Being Mexicans, they were sent back home as the troops returned from WWII.

  • Damn!

  • @morace250 amen brother, I wish more Class 1's would use steam for PR tools. Skip great work as usual.

  • A big train for big men.

  • That was impressive at the beginning, seeing the whole length and everything! That's the only problem with Railways in Britain, very very few places where you can get than sense of scale like you can in US

  • @morace250 They should love it. Steam is the only prime mover that can run on a renewable, wood.

  • love the heavy breathing sounds....

  • Great Videos, Skip!! So, do you work for the UP steam crew?

  • HUGELY cool.

  • Fantastic in the landscape!
