I took Sept. 23rd & 24th off from work becuase I was due for a much needed getaway! Much to my surprise, As I was doing some pretrip research online, I found that the Arthur M. Anderson Great Lakes Freighter was due in to the Port of Duluth at the same time as our visit! She was scheduled for offloading limestone agreget, Then was due in Silver Bay for reloading but was eventually rescheduled to reload out of the Missabe (DM&IR) ore docks in Two Harbors MN.
She was eventually delayed due to heavy seas & bad weather! The Anderson was the Freighter that was traveling with the ill fated Edmund Fitzgerald when that vessel went down in heavy seas! I've been wanting to see the Arthur M. Anderson in person for many many years,..........The weather was miserable,...... But I wouldn't have missed this for the world! About a decade ago, They were going to turn this vessel into a tug barge. They would have removed the pilot house/island as well as removed her stern section & place a V-section for a tug to fit in to push! I don't know about anyone else, But my sentimental feelings are that this vessel is a piece of very historical significance! When her day comes to be decomissioned,.... Let's hope that she is preserved for many generations to enjoy & learn from of that fateful evening on Nov. 10th, 1975. It can actually be a learning piece for all shipping & the lifestyle as a museum piece, Such as the decomisioned William A. Irwin Great Lakes Freighter museum in the Duluth MN. Harbor! I will soon be uploading a photo slide show of the Irvin tour as well!

In 1975, a 729-foot freighter, the Edmund Fitzgerald, left Superior, Wis., headed for Detroit with 26,000 tons of taconite. Enroute, the ship encountered one of the November gales for which Lake Superior is notorious.

The Nov. 10 storm that doomed the Edmund Fitzgerald was matched perhaps by the crew's overconfidence in technology and underestimation of the lake's fury. Although not far from calmer waters when the storm hit, Capt. Ernest McSorley headed northeast across Lake Superior, seeking what he thought would be the shelter of the Canadian shore and eventually Whitefish Bay.

The Arthur M. Anderson, sailing 10 miles behind the Fitzgerald, soon received reports that the ship was listing, and at 7:10 p.m. heard Capt. McSorely's final message: "We're holding our own." The Anderson lost the Fitzgerald's image on its radar screens at 7:25 p.m.

  • I love this video the Arthur M Anderson, it is of my favorite ship on the great lakes!

  • @CNandNSrailfan113 Good to hear that CN! She is one of my favorites on the Great Lakes as well!

  • This ship has been around a long time. Wasn't aware they lasted this long

  • @rrip1 She sure has! A while back she was cut in half & had well over 100' added to her midsection as well as the unloading conveyor added! Sadly to say though, IMHO I do think her days are numbered!

  • Nice video of the Arthur M. Anderson. Glad she wasn't turned into a tug barge - that would just be wrong! She is indeed a piece of history (in relation to the Big Fitz) and once taken out of service it would be proper to have her as a museum ship - anything over going to the scrappers! Glad she remains in service. Your time off from work appears to be well rewarded! Thanks for sharing.

  • @HippyHillbillie Thank You HH! I can't help but agree with you there! A museum piece after being taken out of service would be the right thing to do for the ole girl! It was indeed a very nice getaway from work!

  • @burker1301 Sheeze! Looks like I've missed a few replies! That must have been an awesome experience! Especially when she was active! I hope that some day that I'll get the chance that you had at touring this vessel! That must have been quiet an experience!

  • Nice video. Nice pictures from the Maritime Museum as well.

  • A Brave Ship, and Brave Crew Nov. 1975!

  • @badgerattoadhall Hello Badger! Well, I felt that this Dion karaoke tune would fit well! The Anderson was with the Fitz at the time of her sinking. It kind of reminded me of the movie Titanic & the couple that was in love. He passed on like the Fitz, While she lived & went on in life but had always remembered him.

So, That's how I came to use this song. It just felt right to me! Without the lyrics of course. *grin*

  • favorite ship on the lakes, but why the dion?

  • @IntoWisOutdoors

Had a good friend that worked in the HR Department for LaFarge in Presque Isle. He got my children and I on a tour of this ship as she was loading limestone. Lot of history there!

  • @IntoWisOutdoors thanks Ken, hey give me a call sometime I got some good enws for ya

  • @Trainmasterkreks LOL! Yup! You took some realy nice photos of her as she was docking!

  • Looks familiar good stuff Ken

  • @GreatLakesShips Thank You jacob!

  • Very nice!

  • @artistfarmer Thank You Rita! I found this karaokee version online & liked the way that it sounds! I spliced it a few times to make it fit! I took a walk to the end of the harbor breakwall, The waves at times were crashing over the top! LOL! It was alot of fun shooting this footage! *grin*

  • What an awesome vid Ken! And a very perfect song for the vid! and even with miserable weather, still turned out good!

  • @mzpennee I remember when this happened as well, We use to sing the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" in music class after it came out way back then! It's still a very haunting feeling when thinking back! After I walked the museum grounds at the Whitefish Point. I took a stoll out on the shoreline with many others. I'll never forget that! It was clear & sunny out, Then the fog rolled in across the water until you could only see out about 100', I'll make it back someday!

  • I remember when the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk near Whitefish Bay - near the U.P. of Michigan, near Sault St. Marie - where the locks are.. I was in my teens and happened to be up near there when that accident occurred. It was devistating to say the least. Children of today have so little regard for history and all that it hold.. shame. I too hope the decommission this vessel and allow it to be something to be enjoyed by all those who have a real love for such nautical history.

  • @ZoeToots Yeah, She's actually an old vessel! Her days are numbered due to her size! She's 767' in length & can load a payload of just under 26,000 tons vs the newer vessels that are up to 1004' in length & can carry upwards of 76,000 tons!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! Just like the Titanic!!!! What beauty!
