Lockeport Lockout (1939)

This short film shows a group of men [locked-out fishermen] working together to cut a winter's supply of wood. There are also shots of the town of Lockeport.

In the fall of 1939, more than 600 fishermen and fish handlers in Lockeport, Nova Scotia walked the picket line in front of the town's only employers, Swim Brothers and the Lockeport Company.

Both fishplants had locked their doors rather than recognize the Canadian Fishermen's Union as official bargaining agent. For eight weeks the men held firm. It was a struggle that made national headlines.
