This song was recorded live at Royce Hall UCLA in 1971 and appeared on the album Harvest in 1972. This song was written about Neil's close friends Danny Whitten (Crazy Horse) and Bruce Berry (his roadie) heroin addictions. This was recorded before their deaths. And Young wrote "Tonight's the Night" after their deaths.

Lyrics:

I caught you knockin'
at my cellar door
I love you, baby,
can I have some more
Ooh, ooh, the damage done.

I hit the city and
I lost my band
I watched the needle
take another man
Gone, gone, the damage done.

I sing the song
because I love the man
I know that some
of you don't understand
Milk-blood
to keep from running out.

I've seen the needle
and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie's
like a settin' sun.

  • one of the best songs ever in my opinion

  • "Every junkie's like a setting sun." So haunting... when my mom was in high school, several of her friends got into drugs, and they just seemed to drift away.

  • that voice!.. he really got it right

  • this song says it all about drug addiction.I love this song and know what he is singin bout.

  • every junkies like a setting sun, beautiful and sad, and unavoidably fading away

  • @Voidworshipper

Well... though I do think that avdreader's view might be too harsh, at the same time the message behind is what's important. What singers like Neil Young accomplished with so little. *shrugs*

  • @avdreader1 I don't think you know anything about hip hop beyond what's on the radio and if you limit taste in music due to "dirty" lyrics then that's really quite dumb in my opinion, being that you're missing out on so much. Don't be so closed minded.

  • Oxycontin brought me here
