DeLonge liked the name, but was uneasy after learning the origin: the term was a reference to the B-29 Bomber which dropped the second wartime atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan – the plane’s name was "Bockscar". The plane’s name was commonly misspelled as "Boxcar", and, due to Barker’s desire for the band name to be three words, was spelled out as Box Car Racer."

@Boeser51 I'm pretty sure it was Tom who came up with it. I KNOW I read that Travis at first didn't like the name when he found out about it being the bomber.

@Boeser51 it wasnt intended to even be a real band. hell tom only asked travis to drum because he didnt want to pay a studio drummer. in the history of blink, box car racer is extremely important. Its the reason the final blink album sounded the way it did, and also very responsible for their breakup, as mark was hurt that tom asked travis to be in the band and not him. But tom wasnt trying to hurt mark he only asked travis to be in it for the reason i put above.

@IGotAPagina agreed. I think Box Car Racer is one of the best things tom ever did. AvA is a continuation of Box Car Racer. Theyve stated thats basically what it is and its got tom and david kennedy (who was also in box car racer). Tom sed box car racer has served its purpose and it will never come back.

@StJimmyRocks92 travis came up with the name. its based on an airplane called the B-29 "Bockscar" which was used in the bombing of hiroshima in WWII. Its usually misspelled "boxcar" and travis wanted to be in a band with 3 words so "Box Car Racer" lol

@wwwwwoooeeee I agree to that, however i am not a fan of AvA so i cant say i like em' AvA technically didnt ruin tom's voice, however he sings like a cancerous ogre now due to him singing so differently. If he kept boxcar racer alive, then AvA wouldnt exist, because in a lot of people's opinion Boxcar Racer is so much better than AvA.
