  • Hardy was so precociously modern in depictions of relationships, among other things. Few poets seem to have taken such delight in depressing subjects. I regard him like the film-maker Bergman: so grim as to be delightful. This poems has a "serious" side insofar as it is about memory, toward the end there. Like Larkin, Hardy makes me laugh.
