After RCA rejected Neil Sedaka's demo version of "It Hurts To Be In Love" because it was not recorded in their studios, he produced this version of the song instead. This recording turned out to be a miserable failure. Meanwhile, Gene Pitney made the song his hit. And while Pitney was able to weather the storm of the British Invasion, Sedaka declined into irrelevance - until his comeback in 1974.

Both Neil Sedaka and the late Gene Pitney were (Sedaka still writes and performs) great performers/recording artists; however...
According to Joel Whitburn, from 1958 through 1980, Neil Sedaka had three number one hits in the U.S., and Gene Pitney had zero. Neil Sedaka had nine top ten hits, and Gene Pitney had four. Neil Sedaka had 21 top forty hits, and Gene Pitney had 16. Neil Sedaka had 30 top 100 hits, and Gene Pitney had 24.
