"50,000 people used to live here, now its a ghost town." Those few words explain it all. On April 26, 1986, at 1:23:40 AM, reactor number four near Pripyat, Ukraine suffered a catastrophic steam explosion, causing a nuclear meltdown. A cloud of highly radioactive material was sent for hundreds of thousands of miles in every direction. The radioactive material that was disperssed was approximately 30 to 40 times more than what happened in Hiroshima, and is still present today. The exclusion area, as it is now called, is heavily guarded by soldiers. The radiation levels are still almost 50 times more than what is considered natural. Staying in the area closest to the explosion can cause severe radiation poising. The reactor that exploded over 20 years ago is now enclosed in a giant concrete shelter to keep the remaining radiation particles inside. The Chernobyl accident was the only incident in history to reach the highest level on the International Nuclear Event Scale, a level 7, which requires "a major accident." The incident resulted in 56 direct deaths to the explosion, and 4,000 other people in the nuclear fallout. In total, 366,000 people were forced to leave their homes on that fateful April day, and ordered to only take one suitcase, and they were told they would return in 3 days. It has been 20 years since Chernobyl has been inhabited, and any future attempt of settling the area is very slim. "50,000 people used to live here, now its a ghost town."
