STORY:
Eclipse observers travelled to the island of Sumatra from all over the Indonesian archipelago.

They gathered at a local university to witness this special annular eclipse.

[Ferry Simatupang, Eclipse Observer]:
"A solar eclipse is when the moon totally covers the sun. But this one is very special because the moon does not cover the sun totally, so it creates a bright ring in the sky."

The ring of fire surrounding the moon fascinates the audience.

The best view is from Sumatras Lampung region, and locals didnt want to miss the rare phenomenon.

[Rita, Local Resident]:
"I brought my son to see the eclipse. It doesn't happen every day, so he will undestand what's going on."

And this year's eclipse is even more special as it coincides with the Chinese Lunar New Year.
