Just 14 months ago, my daughter, Nicole Lee, was killed in a car accident from Drowsy Driving. She was a 18 year old freshman honors student at Virginia Tech. In the afternoon of January 26, 2008 she was riding in a car with 4 other honors students, they were returning to Tech from a day of skiing. All passengers were asleep when the driver, a 19 year old male, fell asleep driving and missed a curve in the road hitting a tree at 55 MPH. The number one group at-risk for drowsy driving is young men under 25 years old.
These students were all good kids, not doing anything that seemed wrong or abnormal. They were not speeding, drinking, and all had their seat belts on.
They were however too tired to be driving! Like so many drivers everyday!
Drowsy Driving is something that affects families everyday in the US. More than
1550 deaths occur each year due to drowsy driving. Many people are aware of the effects of alcohol on driving but do not realize that being sleepy and driving is as dangerous as being drunk and driving. Sleepiness impairs judgment, performance, and reaction time as much as alcohol. According to the Nation Sleep Foundation more then half of adults have driven sleepy and 20% have actually fallen asleep at the wheel. This is a major issue for drivers, which people just arent talking about. You can learn more about the problem of drowsy driving at: http://www.drowsydriving.org
this is very much like our Driver Reviver stations that are here especially each long weekend
