The Islamist Revolution

With a weak and divided leadership amongst the Palestinians, a new right wing government in Israel, and recurring political instability throughout the broader Middle East, the salience of different types of Islamist groups on regional and international politics is not likely to be on the wane anytime soon. Policy wonks and diplomats in Europe and the United States continue to debate how to respond to the continued successes of such groups.

Introducing his new book Resistance: The Essence of the Islamist Revolution, Alastair Crooke will provide background on what he calls the "Islamist Revolution" in the Middle East, helping to offer strategic insights into the origins and logic of Islamist groups which have adopted military resistance as a tactic, including Hamas and Hizbollah.

Tracing the essence of the Islamist Revolution from its origins in Egypt, through Najaf, Lebanon, Iran and the Iranian Revolution up to the present day, Crooke unlocks some of the thorniest issues surrounding stability in the current Middle East landscape.

Crooke, who is Director and Founder of Conflicts Forum and based in Beirut, is a former Mideast adviser to EU High Representative Javier Solana, was a senior staff member of Senator Mitchell's Fact-Finding Committee into the causes of the Intifada in 2000-2001, and has mediated cease-fire negotiations with Israel, Islamic Jihad, and Hamas in the past. He has become one of the most hands-on, informed, and controversial interpreters of modern political Islamism.

There were no terrorist attacks on American soil until King George 1(daddy bush) left military bases in Persian Gulf area and "a stone's throw" from Mecca after the questionable war in 1990 against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Diplomacy by the French was about to get Saddam out of Kuwait. But daddy bush wanted a war: oil,two bushes s&l 90',etc. history of USgov fing mid east(&elsewhere) starts just post ww2. 911was effect"blowback", not cause.

Again, an interesting and excellent talk by Mr. Crooke. One disappointment was the moderator grouping the questions by the moderator. And what occurred is the excellent information and question by the photographer/journalist who mentioned that Hezbollah, Amal and the Communists in Lebanon fought together against Israel's aggression went unanswered because the young moderator chimed in and the question from the photog was forgotten.

@emotionalinvalid what i left out is important to what I commented. Mr. Crooke is one of the most decent, courageous and intelligent men and women who walks the earth. Without one of the the three qualities the others would not exist in this precious man.

@PandemicMadness Yeah, but Islam was not responsible for the Jews who were killed in WW2 and the other Eurepeans. as a matter fact the jews scaped to North Africa (Marroco) to get peace and they living there to this day. Islam was not responsible for the Millions of the Native Americans who were slaugthered and Aboriginals in Australia. It's so easy to point a finger to someone and say that's the bad guy when your history is based on VIOLENT. And did I mention the 400 YEARS of te slavery?
