Single issued in Canada on True North TN4-117, February 1974. From the LP "Night Vision" on True North TN-11, October 1973.

Bruce Cockburn's "Night Vision" album came about by accident. He was asked to produce an album for David Wiffen, but at the time, Mr. Wiffen had some personal problems, and became incapacitated by them and unable to make the album. Bruce had put together a band for it, with Pat Godfrey (keyboards), Dennis Pendrith (bass) and John Savage (drums, percussion). They decided to go ahead and learn some of Bruce's new songs and make an album with him instead. The band members then became the core of Bruce's touring outfit.

"Mama Just Wants To Barrelhouse All Night Long" was issued on a single at the beginning of February 1974, but it did not chart, or receive much airplay, if any. I don't think radio was ready for him yet. The "Night Vision" album charted on October 13, 1973 and reached #14 on January 26, 1974.

The cover painting on the album is entitled "Horse And Train" by A. Colville, created 1954.

  • wow he sounds young on this recording..

  • He was 28 when he made this album.

  • Years ago I saw a live concert version of this song on TV with a girl singer on stage with Bruce, vamping and acting sultry. I would love to see that again, or even know if a video of that concert is available to purchase somewhere. Anyone familiar with what I am remembering?

  • The concert you saw on TV was "Rumours Of Glory," shot in 16mm at the Danforth Music Hall, released in a limited theatre run in 1982, and an even more limited VHS issue, which went out of print in the late '80s. It hasn't been reissued on DVD (yet), but there are reports of VHS to DVD transfers that circulate among collectors.

  • Thanks for the post mojo. I feel much better now.

  • My pleasure, man. This song always makes me feel better, too.

  • Every song on that album is so spectacular and this is one of the best. I think you're right about the radio not being ready for him. (I also think this was the case with many artists)

He has never dissappointed me over the years with anything he has put out.

    Good one.

  • Hey guys listen me one moment please ........... one couch, two bourbons, light of candle, your eyees closed, your special girl with her head on your shoulder and this song ........... what a wonderful moment !

A big hello from Milano, Italy
