unfortunately they actually do jump. i was searching for video to show some people. i was running in the wash behind my friend and i witnessed it "jump." it swayed 6-8 inches suddenly towards his calf as he ran. there was no wind, and there were other arms / branches that didn't "jump." i stopped him running and he calmly replied, "i know. i told you they jump." would like to see a video of it though so other's can see. o.O

very true ! this is NOT FUNNY if it happened to you. the Jumping Cholla cactus even reacts to static electricity when walking by in the right conditions (like weather cahnges),causing the cactus balls to detach, one landed on the head and hand of my 3 year old as well as my arm and I never touched the cactus, I just walked by underneath about 12 inches away, hurts like hell. I now live in AZ

They definitely do JUMP. I was atttacked by one when I was 8 yrs old. It jumped on my bare leg and it hurt like hell.

The "jumping cactus" is a cholla or choya. What happens is that the cactus fly off with any gust of wind, they are wicked. I have a few I picked upin sonora mexico. The thorns have a microscopic barb that will hook just about anything, and once in the flesh it is a painin the rear to pull out.
