Grafton Massachusetts House Fire

A three-alarm fire that broke out shortly after 12:30 this afternoon gutted the home of Robert and Kathleen Benoit at 23 Countryside Road in Grafton, Massachusetts.

By the time crews from Upton, Millbury, Westboro and Northbridge joined Grafton firefighters around 12:45 p.m., the two-story colonial-style house was engulfed in flames.

Upton Fire Chief Aaron Goodale said, "Nobody's made entry into the building. It's too dangerous."

Mrs. Benoit said no one was home when the fire started, but there were two dogs and two cats inside the house. She said she was out running errands when a friend called her to tell her about the fire.

The fire had been mostly put out by about 1:15, although crews were still battling hot spots and occasional flare-ups could be seen coming from where the roof had been. The area over the garage on the right side of the house, toward the rear, was destroyed. The vinyl siding on that side of the house had completely melted.

Chief Goodale said the state fire marshal and other authorities had been called in but had not arrived by 1:45.

This was the third fire to strike a home in Grafton in two weeks. The previous fires were fires were in the Airport Road neighborhood, about a three-mile drive away.
