Running. That's what I was doing. That's what I was doing when all hell broke loose.

I was out for my daily run. An avid runner, I train all year round. It was a beautiful summer night, not too hot or cold. My iPod was in, blasting my favorite song of the time (Rolling in the Deep by ADELLE). The warm July breeze was aiding my on my run, blowing from behind as I turned to return home.

As the song ended, I could hear my surroundings. Birds were singing, children were laughing, cars where whizzing by at forty miles per hour. I noticed that another song had neglected to start playing. I figured I had reached the end of my running playlist and had not hit the "loop" button to keep it playing. My pace began to slow. I was tired and there was no music to keep me going. I slowly began to become more aware of my surroundings. It was then that I noticed something strange.

Yes, stranger than my music stopping. Stranger than me being tired after only one and a half miles. Stranger than my pace beginning to slow.

I could hear footsteps behind me. Another runner, perhaps, but there was never any other runners out at this hour. I ran at ten at night. It was cool then, and peaceful. I stopped running and looked behind me. There was no one. Strange, I thought, but I just shrugged it off and kept running. As I continued my run back home, I could hear the footsteps again. I decided not to look back this time out of fright, so I just quickened my pace. That did nothing. The noise behind me quickened too. Someone was following me.

Terrified out of my mind, I continued to run, nearly a sprint back to my house. The entire time, the steps behind me followed close. Eventually I found myself shouting.
"STAY AWAY! LEAVE ME ALONE! WHAT DO YOU WANT? WHO ARE YOU?"
Of course, there was no answer. When I stopped or shouted, the noise would be gone. Once I arrived at my house, I darted inside, shutting the door directly behind me. There was no way anyone could have gotten in behind me. No way.

"No, I'm not crazy. I'm not crazy," I assured myself, looking out the front window. There was no one there. The streets were empty, not even a car was driving by on the road I lived on. It was pitch black out, only streetlights lighting the road. It was beginning to get foggy as well. My heart still racing from the disturbing experience, I decided to shower and call it a night. This was not like me. I usually stayed up until three in the morning, working busily on my laptop.

As I walked up the stairs, I heard that all too familiar noise. Footsteps. Following me. Tears pooled over, and streamed down my cheeks.
"I'm not crazy! I'm not crazy!" I sobbed, going into the bathroom. I looked in the mirror. Of course, no one was there. I tried to shake it off, and I turned on the shower water. After I stripped off my sweaty running clothes, I stepped into the steaming shower. The warm water helped me to relax, and I soon found myself forgetting about the night's occurrence.
Soon though, things took a turn for the worse.
"Bella." I heard a voice whisper my name softly. I didn't know who it could have been. I lived alone. I ignored it and continued to rinse the shampoo from my hair.
"Bella. Bella, I know you're in there." I heard the menacing whisper once more. I then got out of the shower and wrapped myself in a towel. I stood over the sink and splashed my face with cold water.
"I'm not crazy," I assured myself once more.

Then I felt three sharp pains in my back. As I looked up from the sink, there was another face in the mirror. I screamed. Almost immediately, everything started to fade. My hearing started to get muffled, clouds filled my vision, and the world as I knew it began to come to a sudden end. I hit the ground with a thud and sank into the blackness.

I woke later in the hospital. I had no idea how long had gone by. I saw a doctor in the room. I tried to sit up, but I noticed something peculiar. My hands and ankles were tied to the bed.

"Excuse me..." I managed to say, still confused.
"Yes sweetie?" The doctor smiled.
"Why am I tied down?" I asked.
The doctor frowned and looked at me seriously. "You tried to kill yourself."
"No. No, that's not right. There was someone. Someone tried to kill me."
"I'm sorry. We found the knife in your hand. There was no one there."
"No! I'm not crazy! I'm not crazy!" I cried.
"No sweetie, you're not. You're schizophrenic."
"What?"
"You were hearing and seeing things, Bella. You thought someone was stabbing you, but you actually stabbed yourself, probably to escape."
I just nodded.

After I was out of the ICU, I was admitted into a psyche ward. Anyway, that's where I am now. Since I got on medication, the voices stopped. Thinking back, I had been hearing and seeing things my entire life. My mom was schizophrenic too. I guess it was just passed down. But running. That's what I was doing. That's what I was doing when all hell broke loose.
