  • My dear Davie:

its almost impossible to me to tye so many feathers in a single hook!

This video is like watching a magician doing a dificult trick, at the end you just cant believe the end.

Congratulations my friend, Its like you were touched by God when a kid.

    Saludos from Mexico

  • Hi Saludos (aktunpeek),

Thankyou very much for all the kind words I really appreciate them a lot.....

    All the best Davie

  • Davie,

Have just started tying my own and I am fortunate to live by a descent river, I was given a fly very similar to this one and used it this morning with great success (2 fish for the family and 5 released). It was however all black with a grey possum dubbed rib section. Do you know if it has a name? Could I follow your directions to tie it in the darker colour. Fish were hunting smelt on the river but all rose to this fly?

  • Hi MattSadgrove,

I'm sorry I don't know the name of the fly you have described but you could easily follow the way the fly is tyed above as well one or two others I have here on youtube..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie, great fly, thats the most hackles i've seen you use on a fly, does the pattern work with natural squirrel (grey)? as thats all i've got at the moment love the video. Regards Alan

  • Hi Alan,

Squirrel works well with this style of fly...Glad you liked the video...

    All the best Davie

  • @MattSadgrove Porco Dio.

  • As I have said before, You are very good. Here in the States we fish very fine leaders at times, I sometimes will go to 8x or 9 x if I need most of the time I am 5x 6x. I have found that no matter what you do, varnish or glue on the finish head will make my knots weaker. What I have found was a little dubbing wax on the thread just before whip finish works as well. I never hand a fly undo itself. I had flies last for as many as 30 fish before well retiring.

  • Hi snipeandpurplebob,

The hair I like to use most from the Squirrel are from the centre down to the base of the tail as the strength of the hair and colour I feel make a better fly, but I will use the whole tail especially the bleached and dyed ones because of the cost and work to produce them..

    All the best Davie

  • Hi again Davie. Could you tell me from what area of the squirrel tail are you cutting the fibres from. Are the finer fibers towards the tip of the tail better suited than the fibers from the base?
