Meet Rachel and Ellen.

They are lesbian parents, together for 12 years, with their adopted son, Donny, who's been with them for 5 years.

To legitimize their commitment, the two decide to get married, with Donny's well-being in mind. After all, the benefits of marriage help aid both the spouse and the family! Unfortunately, this couple cannot marry as the United States and their state, Texas, does not recognize same-sex marriages or give the opportunity in Civil Unions. So they do the next best thing: marry as heterosexuals do. Rachel married Robert, who works in Automotive Service and Repairs, while Ellen married her friend, Dylan, an owner of a lucrative restaurant.

All was going well, until Rachel became horribly ill and was placed under intensive care in the local hospital. Only Robert and her immediate family could visit, despite Ellen and Dylan being together for years - Robert never visited. Rachel eventually succumbed to her illness and died, leaving her inheritances, her property, all of her possessions to Robert!

Heartbroken and confused, Ellen sued Robert, but the courts ruled Robert as the husband, all inheritance goes to him.

There was even speculation to who should take custody of Donny!

In the end, Robert left with everything that was meant for Rachel's family.

...And to think, all this could've been avoided if same-sex marriage was legalized.

Equal? My ass.

I know what you're thinking: Why not a Power of Attorney? Why not a Will? You DO realize that heterosexuals couples don't have to deal with all of this paperwork, they don't have to deal with the COST of it either. Not only that, but there isn't an alternate way to secure EVERY benefit of marriage through legal documents.

Note: This example demonstrates the inequality of same-sex families. Under current marriage law, one could argue, although it is ridiculous, that a homosexual isn't treated differently or unequal under the law when they marry heterosexually.

This is true, but deceptive, as a homosexual has no interest in the opposite sex, and choice, or the illusion thereof, does not exist.

What this video does demonstrate is how a homosexual family is treated unfairly under the law if marriage is between a man and woman.

  • isnt aprenup and a will gonna take care of this?

  • Nope, still doesn't cover all the benefits of marriage.

  • This story is very sad, but why the hell did those two marry ass hole men?

  • It's not real, just an example of what would happen if gays married under current law. This video is a direct challenge to those who say homosexuals have the same rights -- to marry to the opposite sex.

    It's just not true.

Besides, Robert is the asshole, not Dylan. :P

  • bueno si kumachan me pasa los datos vemos como sino tu y yo lo acemos y estoy viendo como controlar el ms paint XDDDDDDDDD

  • Excellent points in this video. 5 stars!

Why does our government even encourage marriage with tax benefits, etc.?

Maybe because spouses have the power to support each other in good times and bad and to provide for each other after the death of one. That means the rest of society benefits because individuals are taken care of and are more stable.

Why would anyone want to deny access to this this stabilizing institution to any citizen?

  • Ohhh. I see. Thanks for clearing that up :) great vid btw. The one thing some bigots think is that civil unions = marriage and gays already have the same rights and are just fighting for the word marriage. Might want to add that on the next one
