there is no "english" accent. RP is the generic accent, but there are so many regional accents that shakesp's characters would have used--his audience would have heard them and assigned character attributes from them. the soldiers in Henry V are specific. sorry, love, but if you are only listening for the accent you are never really hearing the words.

Can't agree with you there sir. The English accent has nothing to do with the English accent of Shakespeare's time. If we can't accept it in another dialect, we can't truly accept Shakespeare.

Standard American dialect is closer to the original elizabethan pronunciation than RP (what is used on most stages). But that's only according to John Barton.

I just can't take Shakespeare done in an American accent seriously. It sounds better with English accent. Sorry love but if you could act you'd do the accent
