Last year I interviewed my old Soho drinking companion, musician and raconteur Jonjo Mayo, as part of a documentary I'm filming. Jonjo's life could fill several books - friend of Kinky Friedman, Patrick Bergin, Gary Whelan and many other famous sorts, he was as happy drinking wine with a random assortment of flotsam and jetsam as he was with millionaires and their circle. He died in April of this year after a long illness but nobody could say he didn't live his life to the fullest. God bless, Jonjo, you'll be missed.

  • Good video. I'm glad someone had the good sense to record Jonjo in that way for posterity.

I have some musical video from the funeral which I will have to post.

  • @Seanoooog Please do - would be great to have a record of the singing and playing that accompanied Jonjo's funeral, it was very moving indeed (especially The Parting Glass).

  • Poor old Johnjo. I only found out today that he had died.

I used to often see him in the Stags Head in Camden Town. What a character.

I knew very little about him. It would be nice if someone filled us in here a bit about his life.

The Stags Head has gone too now.

  • @PunkyScudMonkey The video I talked about is in fact the one from Pattsydan. Not the best quality but it's better than none.

  • Ive known Mr Mayo since I was eleven back in the eighties, what a character, part of the furniture in the Stags head. The last time i saw johnjo was when he was in Ireland a few years ago. He came up to visit my dad. He had a speaker thing that plugged into the cig lighter of the car, he talked and sang to a herd of cattle that were spying him with curiosity befor gallumping away in alarm! RIP Johnjo, hope to see you again in the stags in the sky!

  • What a handsome man,,, He was very kind to me when I first came to England with Spider... Still so dapper, sadly missed...

  • sleep tight jonjo - your songs and energy in the Staggs Head will always be legendary.
