I''ve been to Kyoto many times before and always wanted to capture the beauty of its zen atmosphere. We made this film over 4 days in Kyoto and its surrounding areas. The place has a magical feel, with beautiful temples, mysterious geisha, and tranquil forests. We also made trips out to nearby Osaka, Nara, and Koyasan. Especially in the winter, the snow was beautiful in the Mount Koya cemetery world-heritage.

On the technical side, we shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and Sony A65. The 5D was mounted on a Glidecam HD-2000 with the Nikon 24mm f/1.4G lens for the flying shots. The Sony A65 was shot with the Zeiss 24mm f/2 and Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 lenses.

Music by Stephen Anderson.

  • is there much filmed using the a65?

  • @attomo1 the a65 is used in about 50% of the clips. You can usually tell which ones they are since the 5D was primarily doing the wide-angle "flying" shots.

  • Is this steadicam?

  • @arubaforever the soaring shots were with a 5d2 mounted on a glidecam hd2000..

  • I would say, the photographer (or camera man), the musician, and the editor all did an excellent work on this clip. I like it a lot!!

  • @TheMpuppy Thanks! I also love photography and have practiced at it for years. I'm glad it's showing in the video!

  • Oh, surely I saw the essence of Japanese beauty in this.

The still scenes expressed eloquently to me.

  • Definitely inspired by devinsupertramp, with the same music and glidecam shots xD.

  • Beautiful! The music was too "Western". It would have been nice to have added a more "Japanese" type of music...like from Kitaro or music from Japanese artist or film.

  • Really a remarkable job , outstanding for motion , angles , compositions and filming . Thumbs up , both .

  • Beautifully shot and composed.

A special note for Stephen: Powerful yet subtle use of bass especially in the beginning of the footage.

  • wow, great video!

  • Wow! Glidecam footage I actually like! I've not seen anyone yet who knows how to use one like a Steadicam. Excellent work! Great fusion of images with music. It was very uplifting to watch and made me want to watch House of Flying Daggers and Memoirs of a Geisha again. Bravo!

  • superbe

  • Nice glidecam work. Were you using it alone or with the forearm brace or stabilizer arm?

  • Fantastic! I'd really love to see Japan one day =)

  • Very filmic, well crafted, with a sense of drama, stunning visuals, nice angles. The flying shots are well executed and add a dreaminess to the over all production. You cannot go wrong in a location like this with great public spaces.
