Hoping to take control of the box office and to outsmart the rampaging chaos of the Hulk, Warner Brothers releases Get Smart this weekend. Get Smart the movie is the big screen adaptation of Mel Brook's vaunted 60's television show by the same name. When Get Smart was originally aired in 1965 it gave birth to the super agent spy satire genre. The movie looks revive that comedic genius with summer block buster flair. The comedy of this movie is well, "Smartly" written and Steve Carell's portrayal of Maxwell Smart carries the film. Especially the improves. The plot is surprisingly simple for a movie this complex. Data annalist Maxwell Smart is the best intelligence man in the government's super secret organization "Control". He is revered by his peers for his great work, but his sole ambition is to be a field agent. Although he passes all of the required exams, He is rejected for this role. But after a most of the agents in his organization are compromised he get's called up in reserve and get's to show his stuff.
This is where the movie begins to resemble and lean on the television show. Maxwell Smart is designated agent 86 and is partnered with the stunningly beautiful agent 99 played by, Anne Hathaway. Hathaway's portrayal of agent 99 is dead on. In the television show Agent 99 is a tall, beautiful agent who is far more competent than Max, but Max's greenish antiques always manage to save them both. And this is where the casting for this movie is dead on. Carrel's comedic strengths are ideally suited for playing the bumbler. Carrel is very convincing as the bumbling agent 86. Hathaway plays off that perfectly showing great on screen chemistry with Carrel. She picks up and in some scenes saves the improves. The movie also stars pro-wrestler turned actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Johnson has grown much as an actor and in the roles that he now plays. But his portrayal as agent 23 is not much different than his wrestling alter ego "The Rock" Johnson is the super over confident hot shot of the agency and he is the one all of the other agents look up to. His improvisation was excellent in this movie and he added a special flair that really gave this film a certain feel. The plot departs a little bit from the TV series in the middle but this movie is loaded with catch phrases from the TV show and features cameos from original 1965 cast members and cars. Other strong performances by veterans Alan Arkin as the chief and Terrance Stamp as the evil Siegfried help to round out this well put together cast. This film scores an overall rating of 8 from CLMNEWS.COM and is a much better film than say a Zohan which is in the same comedic genre. Get Smart will do really well with fans of the TV Show but will also do well with fans of Steve Carrel who may have no exposure to the original Get Smart.
