Los Angeles, CA (HC)
It was March 18th, 1994 in the big City of Angels. My partner Monica was about 3 months out of the police academy. I was her first FTO. Of course I had to first initiate her with my famous code 3 ride through the Los Angeles River. I knew just where to put my tires so we wouldnt end up submerged under the water level (try explaining that tow truck request.)
Just prior to this video, Monica had graduated up to wearing her short sleeved shirts. An unwritten old school policy that rookies could not wear boots, swivel holsters or short sleeved shirts until they proved themselves. The male rookies couldnt even grow a mustache for one year.
Then the radio call any unit a burglary in progress at !@#$%. We took the call. We asked the air unit to start rolling at a high elevation just in case the suspect fled. But I didnt lose too many folks then, as I was on the running team.
This alleged burglary was one of the easiest arrests. He didn't throw the goods down and run. But the element of surprise may have prevented that. The below arrest is the one that Patrick Healy of Channel 4 News spoke about.
Monica read the nice man his Miranda rights, and he waived his rights to remain silent. Bad idea.
