I have done the show (NOT a concert version! lol) and I agree with you. This song does two wonderful things dramatically - it contrasts Anatoly's two very different relationships with a neat, quick change of scene and also sets up the reprise of "You and I" at the end, making it even sadder than it was originally. I am a fan of the UK CHESS, but I have to say, having performed it, I don't hate the US script.
