"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union."

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America's improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation's original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution - a Constitution that had at is very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time.

    This speech will go down in history as one of the top 5 at least. What a absolute inspiration to people everywhere! Great speech, probably his second best behind the 2004 keynote address!

    If I compare the USA to the UK when it comes to race. The USA is certainly more openly racist, but there is less respect for black people in the UK. In the UK racism is well hidden and done privately so you have a generation of black people who aren't politically active, not as driven and take being black for granted and this is why they current generation are lower achievers than previous generations. It seems weird but open racism in the USA has made African Americans more succesful.

    The racially discriminate predatory lending practices of Wells Fargo, racism in the housing, education, employment sectors and judicial system , and police brutality all have yet to be addressed in a direct, forthright manner. He was closer to the ground, and less politically correct here, but he was honest and did not ignore race relates issues as he does today.

    This was a great speech, but sadly it was just that. Of the many racial injustices (execution of Troy Davis, murder of law abiding unarmed young Black men, racially discriminate laws like Stand Your Ground) that would transpire over the next four years , Obama would be largely silent. What could have been a true catalyst for eradicating racial division, was at its apex, a great speech.

    the gop lost their minds over this speech. especially the part about his grandmother, who he adored, being a 'typical' white woman. i knew what he meant. she was from kansas, raised in the 20's and 30's and her daughter married an african man in the 1960's. she had to adjust to that. he was trying to make a point that race is part of what goes on in this country.

    1] Yes according to the last election, it reflected black racism!

    Black are being taught by black that the white mistreated them in past while in slavery.

    But then again, there is God that speak truthfully & Satan that speaks lies to incite racism.

    God planned the white slave masters to bring black slaves to USA to be taught the truth of God by white Christians while Satan keeps inciting black to build up racism.

    Unfortunately, most black are foolish & thus deceived by liars easily.

    2]Most black need to learn wisdom from God[Proverb 2:6] & then the black would FOOLISHLY not:

    a] vote for a black president just because they want a black president;

    b] father 70 percent of the fatherless children raised by husbandless mothers &

    c] account for top percentage among other races of murdering their own kind.

    With such TROUBLING culture, what good could come out of Obama for American when Obama's father left him at the age of 2 without fatherly guidance?

    AMEN=TRULY
