Eric Burdon - Bird on the Beach 1980

'Stood with my kid on the lonely windswept beach
The winter sun was on the horizon
And we were both out of reach
She ran ahead of me looking for the next surprise
Our souls were wet, yes Lord
From the incoming tide

She stopped and turned and looked at me
Lord, tears in her eyes
It's only a dead bird
And its soul has gone to the sky, yeah, yeah

Don't you know he's free
Not like you and me, he's free
Free yeah, not like you and me

I never ever ever thought
that we could be so out of reach
And the lonely times have been like poison, my child
I wish I could practise what I preach, yeah, yeah

Then I can release these feelings
that I've been holding deep inside
I been missing you so much, baby
We only hear, there can be time, yeah
By then you will have forgotten
The dead bird on the beach
Ooh but please don't forget your father,
Because he's out of reach

I got a dream, baby
And my dream is
To be free
Freedom for you and me, yeah, yeah
I'm talking about freedom
Freedom for you and me

You hear my music in the wind
Heartbeat like the rolling tide
One thing you can be sure of my love
Wherever you go, I'll hold your love inside

And I told her, look
Even if you was living
And you could hold him in your hands
You'd still have to open up
And let him fly,
that bird must be free

She stopped and turned and looked at me,
Lord, with tears in her eyes
It's only a dead bird
and its let me far behind
Don't you know he's free (free, free)
just like you and me, be free.

Don't you know he's free
free, free for you and me, yeah yeah yeah

I'm talking about freedom, freedom
Freedom (just like you)
Freedom for you and me. yeah yeah yeah

I'm talking about

  • Mr Burdon getting my heart racing again. Very touching song so beautifully sung. I love it.

  • One of Eric's best songs! The band: Fire Department with Nippey Noya on percussion.

Saw them threetimes in 1980! Great Band!

  • What a beautiful song - made better still by Eric singing.

  • Eric Burdon is a man who made history as he made rock and roll music. He is the real deal. Absolutely incredible and mind stopping.

    -Tom Borg, USA

  • Always superb

  • Seeing this pic of Eric at this stage of his life. Still good looking of course. I am 9 back in early 60s. Too young know about him. And now too old go have missed him. But never too old to listen to him sing whether awake or sleeping

  • Phantastic Song!

Get the Album in 1980 and lost it somewhere. Searching years about it, it's very rare but now i get the CD. Love it...and remember that huge decade!
