My guess is that:
A) Laura Hall is a very talented musician, who knows how to improvise in many musical styles,
And B) Wayne, Ryan and Colin have been working on the show with Laura Hall for a long time, and they each have a fairly good idea of what the others are capable of. Ryan and Colin try to pick musical styles that they know Laura can do.
Of course, PotatoeHater probably knows more about the show than me, and I'm just guessing.

actually if you want facts richard vranch is actually an improviser himself and with the comedy store players he plays music and improvises witht the other performers! i honestly cant say whos more musically talented because i nothing about music! but i know for a fact richard vranch is way more of a performer and a general funny guy!
i'm sure lauras improvised before because most musicians with improv groups go to workshops to learn this stuff aswell its just vranch does it twice weekly

I agree. You'd be surprised how well a talented musician who knows the general style of different kinds of music can improvise. Mind you, there's a chance they cut a few seconds where Laura tells the others the tempo they'll be going in and the chord, or scale or whatever different instruments call it...

Well from a musical standpoint the stuff that Vranch and Hall both play are basic chord progressions, and the guitar and mis. instrument usually follow Laura's lead. To a certain extent, so do the singers.
I've seen some pianists and guitarists improvise music together in different styles, so it is possible. And in Hollywood? They're bound to find talented people capable of that.

i wonder, do they pick styles of music before the show, or they decide it at that moment? in should be rather dificult for pianist to pick the style in few seconds..maybe she already knows what she'll have to play?

She does. Otherwise it would be fuck hard, since she usually also has a guitar and a misc. instrument person around.
On UK version they did ask the audience for styles on some music rounds, but Vranch is obviously more skilled, so there.

Umm... no. Colin and Ryan pick the styles right there. And Laura Hall is WAY more talented than Vranch ever was. Just check out her website.

Wouldn't bother me either way. But they just don't. =/ You can see Wayne waving hands at the musicians indicating when to stop or make a music change. 99% sure Laura knows what she will play this day, and presenters just toss the order of styles around.
