Homs: the Bayyadeh Neighborhood

This poor neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Homs in central Syria is fast becoming the center of a dangerous trend plaguing many other cities and neighborhoods across Syria, namely: the rise of illegal slaughterhouses. Although our activists were unable to film inside any of these slaughterhouses, they, nonetheless, recorded their brief in the neighborhood.

The scenes are indeed no different than those encountered in so many of Syria's unplanned settlements and communities. But behind one of the doors in this particular neighborhood lay an "illegal slaughterhouse," which amounted to nothing more than a small corner in a dank family residence, where lambs that have perished of unknown causes, were slaughtered by the head of the household, their meat intended for sale in established butcher shops.

The worsening living conditions in Syria is leading many people to the adoption of such desperate measures to make ends meet, with no light appearing at the end of that tunnel. Only more darkness seem to lie ahead.
