@fs1natra JWN's game, aside from massive drives that overpowered courses built in the 19th or early 20th centuries, & his putting mastery on fast greens, was, as I say, just so-so. Nothing exceptional. He chose his battlegrounds. And one reason that he won more majors is the fact that he played in more of them. In their first 20 years as PGA pros, Palmer played in only 68 majors; Player, in 69. Nicklaus competed in all 80. I don't hate Nicklaus; I just don't worship him as you do.

POWER GOLF
nicklaus in his early 20s broke the face of his driver something like 10 times in one year
with the ferocity of his swing

@robertschelly Actually, Jack borrowed the white putter, which was a Bulls Eye similar to what Deane Beman was using at the time. It was Beman who gave Nicklaus the putting tips on a patio one evening before the tournament that helped him that week, but, obviously, Beman couldn't loan Jack his putter, since he was also competing, so they went out and found this one. Didn't use it for long, though.
Arnie averaging 278 yards with the driver during this tournament?! With a persimmon driver and the crappy ball?!

@yoda19781 I totally understand your argument, but by saying Tiger didn't beat the likes of Palmer, Player, Trevino, Miller, etc, you are minimizing Tiger's success in Majors. It's not Tiger's fault he just happened to be born in a generation with few legends/hall of fame players. I like what Bobby Jones said, "One cannot compare players of different generations, you can only compete against those of your time". I'm paraphrasing but it's very close to that. If Tiger wins 19 majors he's the best.
