The Oldest Synagogue in Jerusalem

The Jerusalem Synagogue is the oldest Synagogue in Jerusalem. It was built between 760-920 A.D. by the Karaite Jews.

The Khalifa Ghaafar who controlled Jerusalem from Iraq gave his permission to build this Synagogue in 760 A.D.

Furthermore, the Aleppo Codex, situated in the Israeli Museum in Jerusalem, mentions that a wealthy Karaite bought this codex and dedicated it to the Karaite Synagogue in Jerusalem extimated around 920 A.d.

Also shown is a museum describing the Karaites, their traditions and their customs.

I am an Egyptian Jew,born in Egypt, lived there until the 67 war. During the war,the Arab governments arrested all of us and threw us in jail.

In total, a million Arab Jews were jailed, tortured and kicked out of the Arab countries. All our possessions were taken from us.

The Palestinian Arabs have a choice of staying or leaving.

Also, the whole jewish community came to our help after we were kicked out of the Arab counties. Why didn't the Arab countries do the same with the Palestinians.

The Karaite community of Israel is unaware of the treasure they possess in that Synagogue and its history. If they open it to the public especially western Jewry from around the world and give them an opportunity to understand who the Karaite people are; they will gain recognition and respect.

My recommendation is to hire a professional filming crew and make a documentary. This is a very amateurish work.

I like the skylight that was presumably added later. It improves the light for a space that was under the ground level. That probably saved it from total destruction by Arabs, like so many other synagogues in Jerusalem.
