I can remember my father, who passed recently, singing this song to me when I was a little girl. He loved it. Even now it makes me think of him. He instilled in me a love of old music, and oldies, that sticks with me to this day. I grew up on Golden Oldies, the Gatlin Brothers, Neil Sedaka, CCR, Alabama... you name it, I know it and love it. Not to say I don't love more recent music. I love music for music's sake. He had them -all- on 8-track. >_> And his 8-track player worked.
I remember the HUGE outcry of protest years ago when WGN-AM station management (in Chicago) barred Bob Collins from playing this song on the air. The then-program director (and, I think, the station manager as well) felt that this song encouraged alcoholism by "glamorizing" it. Far from it!!!!!! It's a very powerful song, and thank you for sharing it with us!!!!!!
@prebert The religious right are in for a rude awakening should they arrive in Heaven. They just may be greeted by some of us who spent time inside the bottle but are now free of it. There but for the grace of God......

One of my all-time favourite songs. Anyone who has shaken the hand of Johnny Walker, however seriously, will find some resonance in the words.
