the director's name was pier paolo pasolini. he was killed before this movie was ever screened. he was very anti-fascism and this movie was a metaphor of how the fascist government treats its people.

by using children it represents the innocence of the lower classes, & in this scene where they are forced to eat shit it was supprosed to represent the food italy's ppl were forced to eat during the nazi occupation.

the original book the movie is based on '120 days of sodom' is even harsher.

Sometimes people laugh at horrible things because they don't know how else to react, doesn't necessarily mean they think it is funny. some guys aren't good at expressing, well sadness, it's not really a 'manly' thing to do in today's society, so if they're shocked by something so awful and sad they may react by laughing. or something along those lines.

pasolini never had the chance to speak out on the film, so for any of us to try to describe the true intentions of this film on his behalf is useless. however, as a viewer, i interpreted his message as i described. you are welcome to have a different opinion, but it doesn't change my mind on the film. thanks for your input.

@myvoicecarries Seeing the fact that everything apart from the time-setting came from the book wich was written in the 1700's, I find it pretty funny for you to say its a metaphor for fascism and class strugle etc..

Its just a movie about excess, nothing more nothing less. It would have been ridiculous, inept and pretty lame for Pasolini to use the concept of 120 days only to make a point about fascism..

If they used real s**t the director would had gone broke paying the hospital and sueing bills as most of them would had died from Hep A, B, Polio, Blood clotting, Influzenia and intestinal parasites or really sick from it.
