A look at how the Dell EqualLogic storage array controllers react to a firmware upgrade. This was an upgrade from firmware 4.3.5 to 5.0.1 on an EqualLogic PS6000 storage array. Since this was recorded, Dell has found issues with their 5.0.0 and 5.0.1 and suggested that users wait for the 5.0.2 firmware update.
This firmware upgrade was done in a live environment where the disk array was serving datastore LUNs to VMware vSphere 4.0 VMs. The VMs stayed online and active during the entire upgrade.
I apologize for the poor audio.

  • Did you need to restart the array afterwards? The firmware upgrade notes list that as a post-upgrade task. If so, it make the equallogic very-non-enterprise.

  • @tokomok There are 2 fully redundant controllers in the EqualLogic. It fails over automatically between the 2 controllers as it does firmware upgrades to both controllers. The restart of the controller due to the upgrade is completely transparent the iSCSI clients. I'm always in awe every time I upgrade firmware on these systems.

  • Hi Bill, I’m Dylan Locsin from Dell’s Storage Product Group, working on EqualLogic with Thomas (sjolshag). If you have not yet spoken to support, please do so immediately, since you are running 5.0.1. Our engineering team identified a few changes they needed to make to 5.0.1, and they’re planning to release an updated version of the firmware (v5.0.2) on or around August 30, 2010. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks, Dylan

  • Hi, I’m from Dell’s storage product group. Thanks for the video. As you noted, currently we recommend that customers do not upgrade to firmware versions 5.0.0 and 5.0.1. Instead they should wait for the next release, which is expected in the near future. More details will be sent soon to the customer base. If customers have any questions, please contact Dell EqualLogic support.
