Plymouth City Councilmember Tim Bildsoe and Communications Manager Helen LaFave surprised Mayor Kelli Slavik with a roast last Tuesday dedicated to her efforts to promote the citys distinction as #1 on Money Magazines Best Places to Live list for 2008. The scheming city leaders in particular satirized Slaviks exuberant endorsement of static cling window decals. A surprised and laughing Slavik took the ribbing in stride, acknowledging the efforts of city residents, other council members, past mayors and city employees in earning the award.

Representatives from communities along the Luce Line Regional Trail recently joined the Three Rivers Park District Board of Commissioners to celebrate the trails completion at Schaper Park in Golden Valley.
The trail winds nearly 9 miles through Plymouth and Golden Valley, connecting to the Grand Rounds trail system operated by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

A Robbinsdale woman is stirring up the local fashion chat with her blog www.alreadypretty.com. Up to 34,000 people visit her blog each month. Sally McGraw has also started another website called www.shoplocalshops.com a guide to boutique shopping in the Uptown, Grand Avenue and Edina areas.

Speaking of blogs, Sun intern and St. Louis Park Senior High alum Alexandra Wertz will begin posting her blog to www.mnsun.com in the near future. Wertz departs Saturday on a global semester abroad through St. Olaf College that will take her to the United Nations Headquarters in Switzerland and then to Egypt, Thailand, India, Hong Kong and South Korea. She will write about her experiences at mnsun.com.

With school starting on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Brooklyn Park Police will be increasing patrols before and after school hours looking for school bus law offenders. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the majority of the nations school bus fatalities actually take place outside of the bus.

Free help for Medicare beneficiaries is available at the Brooklyn Center Community Center the second Wednesday of the month, starting Sept. 9. Volunteer health insurance counselors from Senior Community Services will be available to answer questions about such issues as choosing the best supplement health insurance, understanding Medicare Part D, low income options, sorting out medical and hospital bills, appeals and medical assistance. Caregivers or family members are welcome to schedule an appointment for Medicare beneficiaries. To learn more call 763-569-3405.
